Fixture 3: Atletico Madrid 1 - 4 Aston Villa
Scorers:
Atletico Madrid
Forlan 72'
Aston Villa
Carew 6' 50'
Agbonlahor 80', 85'
The game started out well for Madrid who passed the ball well. They were extremely unlucky when, after 6 minutes, a huge rebounded clearance from madrid ended up going back past the defence and putting Carew in the clear. He made no mistake and slotted into the bottom corner. Madrid pushed for the equaliser and nearly had shouts for a penalty, but Nicky Shorey was judged to have made the foul just outside the box. He picked up a yellow for his trouble. Shorey could, and should, have walked moments later when a mistimed tackle swept away the legs of a madrid player. Fortunate to go in at the break 1-0 ahead and with 11 men.
Both teams came out fighting in the second half. Carew was causing problems at the back and only resolute defending from Villa kept the scores level. Carew made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half. He broke clear of the defence and placed the ball home.
Madrid didn't give up and struck back when Forlan, on as a second half substitute, smashed the ball into the top right hand corner from the edge of the area. A quality finish.
It was very tight until the last ten minutes. Agbonlahor broke clear of the defence and went to lob the keeper from outside the area. The keeper got fingertips to it and pushed the ball straight up in the air. Agbonlahor out-jumped the defender and headed the ball back towards goal, sending the ball trickling past the static goalkeeper(who was doing sod all to help in the middle of his area) and into the net. Agbonlahor got his second and Villa's fourth five minutes from time when he smashed it home from the edge of the area.
A great game to play that the scoreline doesn't really reflect. It really could have gone either way. Well played Monster.
